If a hot water unit is actively leaking, venting continuously, or the water is running dangerously hot, switch it off and treat it as urgent.

No hot water at all
A pilot light that will not stay lit, a tripped element, or a failed thermostat are the usual culprits.
Hot water runs out quickly
Often a failing element or thermostat in a storage system, or sediment reducing the usable tank volume.
Water is rusty or discoloured
Discoloured hot water can indicate corrosion inside the tank, which usually points to replacement rather than repair.
The unit is leaking or constantly venting
Some discharge from the relief valve is normal. A steady stream, or water pooling under the unit, is not.
